Thom Yorke names new band Atoms For Peace
by admin on Feb.26, 2010, under News
On Thursday Radiohead front man Thom Yorke revealed the name of his new band — Atoms for Peace, and also announced a series of U.S. tour dates.
Yorke first introduced the band late last year. The band is composed by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, drummer Joey Waronker of R.E.M. Mauro Refosco of Forro in the Dark, and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich.
When the band officially debuted in Los Angeles last October, it was billed with question marks, because it had no name.
On Radiohead’s web site, Yorke wrote; “It has been decided that we call ourselves Atoms For Peace. Hope you like the name. It seemed bleedin’ obvious.”
Atoms for Peace is a track on Yorke’s 2006 solo album, The Eraser.
The musician and political activist said the band would play eight dates starting in New York on April 5th before hitting the three-day Coachella music festival in Indio, California on April 18.
Radiohead recently took a break from recording but performed a Haiti relief fund-raising concert in Los Angeles in January.

Serj Tankian urges government to recognize Armenian Genocide
by admin on Apr.09, 2009, under News
Serj Tankian, along with Tom Morello and the Axis of Justice, has launched a campaign encouraging government leaders to recognize the Armenian Genocide and commemorate the yearly global day of remembrance for victims of the human rights atrocity on April 24, according to a press release.
Tankian has posted a YouTube video on the Axis of Justice website in which he and other activists urge President Obama to affirm his pledge and officially recognize the Armenian Genocide, which took place in 1915, just after the start of World War I. The video, which also features comments from Morello, The Coup’s Boots Riley and Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), asks viewers to call the White House to implore President Obama to put an end to what Tankian describes as Turkey’s well-funded whitewash and officially recognize the systematic killing of more than a million Armenians, according to the release.
“Last year, Barack Obama noted that many of the same brutal tactics employed today in Darfur are the same as those used by the Ottoman authorities against defenseless Armenians back in 1915,” Tankian said in a statement. “As we approach the global day of remembrance on April 24th, we look to both the President and Congress to stand up for what’s right; to speak against the Armenian Genocide and all genocides at the level of American values, and to never again allow the United States to be dragged down to the level of Turkey’s threats.”
Tankian and Morello will discuss the issue during an Axis of Justice radio show which will air April 17 on KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles and on Sirius Satellite Radio.
Tankian also has written an editorial that outlines the history of the Armenian Genocide and shares the personal story of one of his family members who survived the massacre; all four of Tankian’s grandparents survived the Genocide.
Nirvana makes high-quality vinyl debut
by admin on Apr.08, 2009, under News
Three major-label albums of Nirvana–”Nevermind, “In Utero” and “MTV Unplugged”–are being reissued this year on 180-gram, audiophile-quality vinyl for the first time. All three records are scheduled for a 2009 release, with “Nevermind” coming first, according to a Billboard report. However, no official release date has been confirmed.
The three-album catalog, remastered by Bernie Grubman, is being released by Original Recordings Group, a vinyl imprint that got its start reissuing old jazz and classical albums. Last year, ORG launched a “Classic Alternative” division with the release of Beck’s “Odelay” and TV on the Radio’s “Return To Cookie Mountain.” Other ORG albums include Diana Krall’s “The Look of Love” and “John Coltrane’s “Live At The Village Vanguard.”
Though ORG has the North American rights to the vinyl releases of the three Nirvana albums, the band’s first album, “Bleach,” is currently being manufactured for vinyl release by Sub Pop.
ORG founder Monti Olson said he pitched the idea of releasing the bulk of the Nirvana catalog on vinyl to Universal Music and the band’s management, Michael Meisel and John Silva, who approved the deal.
The vinyl business is growing, according to Olson. “The bulk of the vinyl in the retail space goes through independent stores–the Amoebas and the Waterloos of the world that have always been in the vinyl business,” Olson told Billboard. “But what’s happening is more and more people are coming in with a curiosity about buying record albums.”
Olson also said he has some new accounts that are experimenting with vinyl, like Best Buy. “I don’t know how strong their initiative is, but they’ve allotted a little bit of floor space for vinyl.”
He said the label plans to release more classic alternative music from the ’80s and ’90s on 180-gram vinyl. “They’re the best sounding records on the market,” he said.
Beatles to release re-mastered versions of entire catalog

The Beatles will release their entire catalog in digitally re-mastered and prolonged versions in September, the first time such an effort has been undertaken.
The re-releases were announced by Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI Music for Sept. 9, which coincides with the worldwide release of “The Beatles: Rock Band” for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii video game consoles.
The re-mastered albums, which were produced over a four-year period by a team of engineers at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London, will all feature the original UK album art, along with expanded insert booklets featuring new liner notes and rare photos. For a limited time, each CD will also include a short documentary about the album.
The collection contained all of the Beatles albums in stereo, including the band’s first four full-length records, which had previously only been available on compact disc in their original mono versions. Another reissue will combine two archival collections–”Past Masters Vol. I” and “Past Masters Vol. II”–into one volume, simply titled “Past Masters.”
All 14 albums will be made available as a single boxed set, which will also include a DVD featuring all of the mini-documentaries included on the individual discs. A complete list of re-mastered albums is included below.
In addition to the digitally re-mastered CDs in stereo, a second box set, “The Beatles in Mono,” will contain 10 of the band’s albums with their original mono mixes intact. As a bonus, the set’s versions of “Help!” and “Rubber Soul” will also include the original 1965 stereo mixes for each album. The mono box set will also be released Sept. 9.

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr unite for meditation
by admin on Apr.06, 2009, under News
Former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr reunited Saturday (4/4) to perform at Radio City Music Hall for The David Lynch Foundation’s “Change Begins Within” benefit concert. The director’s foundation, which searchs for to teach Transcendental Meditation to millions of students worldwide, brought the former bandmates together for the first time since a 2002 memorial concert for George Harrison.
The two surviving Beatles performed individually but during McCartney’s headlining set, he brought Starr on stage to sing “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Starr then moved to the drums for the encores, during which other musicians on the bill–including Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder, Donovan, Bettye LaVette, Moby and Ben Harper–joined them for two more 1960s songs, “I Saw Her Standing There” and “Cosmically Conscious,” which McCartney wrote during his famous 1968 trip to learn Transcendental Meditation at the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in Rishikesh, India, according to The New York Times.
John Lennon and Harrison were acknowledged Saturday night when Starr talked about writing “It Don’t Come Easy” with Harrison and Crow sang “My Sweet Lord.” According to a BBC news report, McCartney also paid a tearful tribute to Lennon before playing “Here Today,” a song he wrote for his former bandmate.
Harrison, McCartney and Starr last performed together in 1994 to record material for their “Anthology” series.
KISS to let fans decide cities for fall tour
by admin on Apr.06, 2009, under News
KISS has exposed plans for tour across US and Canada this fall, with the itinerary to be determined by fan input, the band said in a taped video announcement.
Partnering with social-media-event company Eventful, the legendary masked rockers will map their fall tour schedule–currently set to kick off this September at a still-unknown location–according to their fans’ wishes. “No matter where the fans say–from stadiums to cornfields–if there are enough votes, KISS will be there,” the band said in a press release.
Beginning soon, fans will have their say at a special voting website. Running tallies of the voting will be available at a variety of locations, including the KISS MySpace page. Just for participating in the vote, fans will be given the chance to purchase pre-sale tickets for the tour.
“KISS has never followed the rules–we have always broken them,” bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons said in a video announcement posted at the band’s website. “KISS has never listened to critics–we have always listened only to the fans. It’s time to give back to the fans with bigger shows and longer set lists. And, for the first time anywhere, we want our fans to tell us where they want us, and when.”
“No band has ever given their fans the power to decide what cities they play, and no fans deserve it more than ours,” added vocalist/guitarist Paul Stanley. “We’re leaving the next US and Canadian tour up to the Army. When they stand up, they will be counted.”
The group announced last year on its website that it had begun work on its first new studio album in 11 years. The record, which is being produced by Stanley, would be the band’s first album of all-new material since 1998’s “Psycho Circus.”
“We have 4 tunes recorded,” Simmons wrote on the band’s website. “If you’re a fan of our stuff from about 1977, you’ll feel right at home. All of us have taken up the songwriting call to arms in the same spirit we once did–without a care in the world and without outside writers. Nothing to prove to anyone. Just doing what comes naturally. Ignoring fashions, trends and with a personal vow from all of us: no rapping.”
AC/DC returns behind “Black Ice”
by admin on Apr.06, 2009, under News
AC/DC Rock legends have revived last fall’s “Black Ice World Tour” with ideas to hit stadiums and arenas across the US this summer.
The veteran rockers will begin the American trek July 28 at Foxborough, MA’s Gillette Stadium after wrapping up a thorough in-progress European leg at the end of June. The US outing is currently booked through a Sept. 8 performance in Anaheim, CA. The full itinerary is below.
The summer run comes on the heels of the October release of “Black Ice,” the band’s first new studio effort in more than eight years. The new album made history, debuting at No. 1 on the album charts in 29 countries including the US, with stateside sales of more than 780,000 copies its first week. The record became Columbia Records’ biggest debut album since Nielson SoundScan sales tracking began in 1991, according to a press release. The successful first week was quite a feat, considering the album is sold exclusively at Walmart, Sam’s Club and via the band’s website.
The rock icons kicked off the initial leg of the “Black Ice World Tour” last October, marking the group’s first live performance in five years. The long-awaited trek posted sellouts in 18 major markets, prompting encore performances in several cities, and broke sales records at a handful of North American venues.
The “Black Ice” tour’s October 26 debut in Wilkes-Barre, PA, fascinated fans from around the world. To celebrate their dedicated fanbase, the band created a seven-episode web documentary chronicling various attendees of the trek’s opening night. Two of the seven episodes are available now at ACDCFannation.com, with one new episode unlocked each Tuesday through May 12.
Judas Priest revisit ‘Steel’ on summertime jaunt
by admin on Mar.30, 2009, under News
Judas Priest will take to the road again this summer to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their classic album “British Steel.”
The summertime trek, which gets underway July 1 in St Charles, MO, has the metal icons co-headlining with Whitesnake on most of the dates. The outing wraps up Aug. 11 at Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre and comprises stops at festivals, fairs and outdoor venues across the nation, as well as a July 9 stop in Toronto. The full schedule is below.
Judas Priest has been a regular act on the summer concert circuit in recent years, including the Ozzfest and Metal Masters tours. This year’s jaunt marks the upcoming anniversary of the group’s 1980 release, “British Steel,” and the band will commemorate the event by playing the classic album in its entirety at upcoming live shows–including hit singles “Breaking the Law” and “Living After Midnight”–as well as songs from other albums.
Remastered in 2001 and reissued with a few bonus tracks, the fresh version of the three-decade old album preceded the band’s most recent release, 2008’s “Nostradamus,” which debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200, becoming their highest charting album ever.
